Guardians of Time | Special Exhibition at the Musée Guimet in France

Rebuilding the Spiritual Community of the Age The Musée Guimet in France has collaborated with Jiang Qiong Er on a new art project, “The Guardians of Time,” to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France.

With an ardent necessity, an almost vitalenergy, Guardians of Time brought me back to essential, almost metaphysical issues.l relearned the meaning of the words "simplicity" and "serenity", far from the tumult of the world.

In 2024, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, the Guimet National Museum of Asian Art in France invited Chinese artist Jiang Qiong Er to create a new art project titled “The Guardians of Time.” Through her imaginative and innovative approach, she reinterprets Chinese civilization and mythological symbols in a contemporary context, depicting a bridge of exchange between Eastern and Western thought and culture. This project also serves as a significant landmark for celebrating the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism and welcoming Olympic visitors to Paris. Jiang Qiong Er's grand-scale installation art series consists of five works: “Origin,” “Initiation,” “XII Calls,” “Her Voice Bravery,” and “Introspection.”

Fantastic creatures appear on the thresholds of caves. For the artist JlANG Qiong Er, each of these mythical creatures embodies a value essential to the harmony of the human community.

Twelve in number, like the twelve signs of the European and Chinese Zodiacs, these creatures are hybrid, syncretic beings, made up of elements borrowed from legendary Chinese creatures of the past, combined with the help of artificial intelligence. Each tells a unique story. In this Year of the Dragon, elements of dragon iconography are woven into the morphology of these twelve creatures, composing a new bestiary for the 21st century. In this year under the zodiacal sign of the dragon, this central figure of Chinese mythology is woven into the morphology of these twelve creatures, forming a new bestiary for the future.

As if emerging from the bowels of the earth, these creatures are created by JlANG Qiong Er to remind us of our common origins and reaffirm the values that unite us. Each carries a particular message, expressing the hope of restoring our common humanity. These mythical, emblematic creatures, which remind us of essential human values, are the guardians of time.

To the rhythm of the cycle of day and night, of the four seasons, of festive moments and celebrations, they appear on the façade and come to life. They interact with the public on the Place d'léna, which becomes a poetic, friendly and playful meeting point.

This exhibition, titled “The Guardians of Time,” uses time as its theme and artificial intelligence technology as its medium to depict a bridge of exchange between Eastern and Western thought and culture at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Art in France, a premier institution for Asian art. Here, we collectively witness the significant moments of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism, and the successful hosting of the Paris Olympics.

The Origin

“Each of us is a guardian of time. Guardians of Time is a call tomankind. To the rhythm of the civilisation of the twelvehours, we are invited to reunite in a spirit of fraternity.” — JIANG Qiong Er

The fagade of the building is entirely covered in a veil of red tulle, giving the museum the colours of China and building a bridge between past and present.Contemporary caves seem to have been carved into the upper part of the rotunda and at the windows, while the fagade has been reborn as a reinterpretation of the roc-cut sites of Mogao(Dunhuang), Yungang and Longmen in China. Masterpieces of Chinese rock-cut architecture take their place in the heart of Paris to create a fascinating and moving experience. Producing a striking and spectacular impression, the fagade takes the viewer back to the enchantment of the discovery of these renowned caves and awakens the sense of wonder that arises from the original artistic gesture that gave birth to the extraordinary works of art they conceal.

Initiation

“Where the light of the lighthouse reaches is the past, present and future, the horizon of the human spirit.” — JIANGQiong Er

In China, red is a symbol of luck and happiness. A sign of prosperity, a hallmark of honour, red embodies China. In Chinese culture, red is linked to the creation of the world, to fire. lt is associated with vitality and fertility, the sun, blood and the energy of life, Here, the artist JlANG Qiong Er uses different shades of red (fire red, cherry red, sienna, purple, scarlet, carmine, vermilion, hibiscus, pomegranate, cinnabar, etc.), each with its own cultural connotation and poetic resonance. Walking through the hall, cladin red by JlANG Qiong Er, like a rite of passage, is designed to convey to visitors the creative warth of this propitiatory colour.

XII呼唤 Twelve calls

"In meditative silence, we speak to heaven and earth with our hearts,in our humanity." — JIANG Qiong Er

The bronze statues of the mythical creatures that appear on the fagade are gathered here in a circle: Authenticity, Fraternity,Inclusion, Peace, Equality, Benevolence, Time, Exploration, Bravery, Nature, Wisdom and Freedom.Twelve in number (like the twelve signs of the Europeanand Chinese zodiacs),these hybrid, syncretic creatures arecomposed from elements borrowed from ancestral Chinese legends, recombined by JlANG Qiong Er with the help of artificial intelligence. In this Year of the Dragon, they incorporate morphological details of this central creature of Chinese mythology. Each carries a particular message, each expresses a hope. As they seem to float in the air, the rustle of their multilingual murmur fills the space. Their incantations call for human harmony.

Her Voice – Bravery

“Dialogue takes place here, andthe collective voice of Chinese women is woven together into an epic tapestryof poetry.” — JIANG Qiong Er

Vibrant with resilience, these poetic words are the collective work of sixty Chinese women, JlANG Qiong Er sublimates it in a new form of writing, embroidered in metal. This "feminine" script is inspired by nu shu, the only writing system in the world createdand used exclusively by women. Dating back to time immemorial, nu shu resembles Chinesecharacters, but on a diamond rather than square base. Ofen embroidered, it was used by the women of communities originally from Hunan province to transcribe legends, songs and vows, butalso to correspond confidentially with each other at a time whenthey were not allowed access to writing, it is no longer used, but JlANG Qiong Er has used artificial intelligence to reinvent a new form of secret female writing to convey the words of contemporary wоmen.

Inspection

“Only in looking up to the sky do we return to the light, to the moment when words were formed.”— JIANG Qiong Er

An invitation to a suspended moment, the 4th floor rotunda is transformed into a contemporary grotto that invites you to listen to yourself. The interior of the dome is encircled by a scented mesh made from 5,000 pu-erh tea bricks. This drink, with its medicinal qualities, personifies the preciousness of the passing of time: a living product, pu-erh tea improves with age. On the floor, stones are laid out by JlANG Qiong Er in a mineral garden that echoes the creative energy of the cave. In this dome, imagined as a space for meditation but also for creation, each person becomes the guardian of their own time.
