Guardians of Time | Special Exhibition at the Musée Guimet in France
Rebuilding the Spiritual Community of the Age The Musée Guimet in France has collaborated with Jiang Qiong Er on a new art project, “The Guardians of Time,” to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France.

In 2024, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, the Guimet National Museum of Asian Art in France invited Chinese artist Jiang Qiong Er to create a new art project titled “The Guardians of Time.” Through her imaginative and innovative approach, she reinterprets Chinese civilization and mythological symbols in a contemporary context, depicting a bridge of exchange between Eastern and Western thought and culture. This project also serves as a significant landmark for celebrating the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism and welcoming Olympic visitors to Paris. Jiang Qiong Er's grand-scale installation art series consists of five works: “Origin,” “Initiation,” “XII Calls,” “Her Voice Bravery,” and “Introspection.”
Fantastic creatures appear on the thresholds of caves. For the artist JlANG Qiong Er, each of these mythical creatures embodies a value essential to the harmony of the human community.
Twelve in number, like the twelve signs of the European and Chinese Zodiacs, these creatures are hybrid, syncretic beings, made up of elements borrowed from legendary Chinese creatures of the past, combined with the help of artificial intelligence. Each tells a unique story. In this Year of the Dragon, elements of dragon iconography are woven into the morphology of these twelve creatures, composing a new bestiary for the 21st century. In this year under the zodiacal sign of the dragon, this central figure of Chinese mythology is woven into the morphology of these twelve creatures, forming a new bestiary for the future.
As if emerging from the bowels of the earth, these creatures are created by JlANG Qiong Er to remind us of our common origins and reaffirm the values that unite us. Each carries a particular message, expressing the hope of restoring our common humanity. These mythical, emblematic creatures, which remind us of essential human values, are the guardians of time.
To the rhythm of the cycle of day and night, of the four seasons, of festive moments and celebrations, they appear on the façade and come to life. They interact with the public on the Place d'léna, which becomes a poetic, friendly and playful meeting point.
This exhibition, titled “The Guardians of Time,” uses time as its theme and artificial intelligence technology as its medium to depict a bridge of exchange between Eastern and Western thought and culture at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Art in France, a premier institution for Asian art. Here, we collectively witness the significant moments of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism, and the successful hosting of the Paris Olympics.

The bronze sculpture series XII Calls was born in the Bibliotheque (Library) of the Musée Guimet in France. The twelve mythical beasts, embodying the noble virtues of humanity, whisper and call out. Surrounding them in a circle are statues of gods and Buddhas that stand for human wisdom, remaining silent yet responsive all the while. The twelve mythical beasts symbolize the shared spiritual beliefs of humanity: peace, courage, equality, nature, exploration, universal fraternity, kindness, freedom, authenticity, wisdom, time, and inclusiveness. On this occasion, Jiang Qiong Er reawakens this theme through the duality of time, presenting the works in an entirely new form of colored encaustic paintings. This is not only a solemn expression of her cultural ideals, but also a bold exploration of new artistic materials.Wax, as a distinctive medium, is moldable, meltable and flammable—it can exist either as a liquid or a solid, and maintains a reversible state over time. By employing this material that can stand up to the passage of time, Jiang Qiong Er freezes the messages dedicated to future civilizations, making XII Calls not only a vital clue to exploring the current human psyche, but also a new starting point in her creative journey.

In the Her Voice series, Jiang Qiong'er draws inspiration from the ancient Nüshu script of Jiangyong County in Hunan Province. Leveraging contemporary technologies, she integrates, reorganizes and recreates traditional writing systems including Nüshu, Oracle Bone Script, Seal Script and Cursive Script, thereby developing a new form of Nüshu for the 21st century—a contemporary writing system that embodies the essence of female spirit and technological ingenuity.
No longer merely a carrier of symbols or a linguistic system, this new Nüshu "breathes" in three-dimensional space through the interplay of three-dimensional carving and contrasting materials. The undulating textures of the new Nüshu intertwine with light and shadow, reflecting the unique sincerity, forthrightness and courage of women. This series transforms "language" from a written form into a tangible "existence", and elevates "calls" from the pages of books into physical space, composing a spiritual ode to contemporary women and documenting their stories and secrets.

The Whispering Clouds series carries forward the meditative beauty of the East. Centered on China’s traditional bamboo filament inlay craftsmanship, the works feature ultra-fine bamboo strips that are manually cut and inlaid to form cloud-like flowing textures as light and shadow interplay.Ranging from folding screens, table desks and table screens to storage boxes, Whispering Clouds is more than just a collection of artifacts—it is a ritual dedicated to time. In the interplay of bamboo and light, each piece is transformed into a vessel of time that "breathes" in harmony with light and shadow, reflecting the warmth of artisanal craftsmanship and the resonance of the soul.
