Milan 2024 : Roche Bobois unveils its new collaboration「BAMBOO MOOD祥竹」with Chinese artist and designer Jiang Qiong Er

THE BAMBOO MOOD

As an annual global design extravaganza, Milan Design Week 2024 once again attracted the attention of the global design and media communities this spring. Among the highlights was the “BAMBOO MOOD” collection, a collaboration between French high-end home furnishings brand Roche Bobois and Chinese artist and designer Jiang Qiong'er, which stood out as a significant fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics at this year's Milan Design Week.

The “BAMBOO MOOD” collection also marks Roche Bobois' first full-scale furniture collaboration with a Chinese designer. In 2024, as Roche Bobois celebrates its 20th anniversary in the Chinese market and the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, the launch of this collaborative series holds significant symbolic importance.

Jiang Qiong Er :
“Bamboo has always fascinated me. Elegant, hardy, fluid and peaceful, it counters strong winds with insolence and play. Bamboo bends but does not break. It whispers, trembles, filters the light, and plays with shadow. Timeless. It may seem fragile, yet it provides scaffolding for the world’s tallest skyscrapers. I designed this new Bamboo Mood collection as an invitation to travel; an inexhaustible source of inspiration, poetry, and dreams.”

THE BAMBOO MOOD collection
With this collection, the designer wanted to conjure bamboo, a powerful symbol in Chinese culture. The plant represents the key values of integrity, resilience, simplicity and harmony. Jiang Qiong Er reinterprets these values with a poetic spin, adding touches that are often quirky but consistently elegant. The collection comprises a sofa, a screen, a console, and cocktail tables, together with rugs and ceramics.

The screen is equal parts sculpture and furniture. Its highly contemporary design summons bamboo sticks that have been cut and perforated. Available in versions with two, three or four panels, it is dyed in the mass for a singular color effect that changes when viewed from different angles. The sofa’s fluid lines are an invitation to quiet contemplation and serenity. It is upholstered in a honeycomb stretch fabric, with subtle celadon- green or coral threads highlighting the curved backs. The cocktail tables offer a graceful interpretation of a cut bamboo stem; color shading accentuates the node, which adds gentle definition to the slanting silhouette. They are available in several colors, whether in a lacquered monochrome or with a wood-effect top. The rugs conjure stylized bamboo sticks in a multicolor palette that is both vibrant and delicate.

Two pieces have been specially developed - a meditation seat and a cocktail table in an exclusive colorway – for the Gardiens du temps (Guardians of time) exhibition conceived and created by Jiang Qiong Er for the Guimet National Museum of Arts in Paris as part of its “Guimet X China 2024” program.
